On Thursday we mainly teach pupils from a local college and school but there are a few spaces for others. Crafts available are woodwork, silverwork and leatherwork.
We teach projects in wood suitable for all levels from a simple carved bowl to musical instruments and furniture. Some of the things people have made over the past year include stools, dove-tailed boxes with marquetry lids, candle holders, guitars, lyres, drums and CD racks. We will always find a project that is both suitable to a person's ability and is something they want to make. We use traditional hand tools and locally sourced wood wherever possible and encourage anyone who comes to the workshop to complete their project to the very best of their ability. Everyone is encouraged to give attention to detail and they always end up with a beautiful object that they are proud of.
We offer a basic introduction to silversmithing. This starts with the making of simple silver rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings and moves on to more complicated stone-setting.
Our leatherwork is led by Jeannie Ireland. Some examples of the things you can make with her are simple leather belts, a purse or wallet, animals or juggling balls. You will learn techniques including cutting the leather, different stitching, bevelling, printing and dyeing. Places with Jeannie are limited to just a few at a time. She has also run a weekend course for us making quivers.
